If you use more than 100,000 gallons of water on any day, you are required by Massachusetts Law to register your water use. This translates to 5 acres of cranberry bog, on the assumption that a cranberry bog uses 10 acre feet of water per year. You may not actually use that much water, but five acres is the trigger to register water use IF YOU ARE A CRANBERRY GROWER. Public water suppliers, yes, including schools and other public buildings, that serve more than 25 people at any one time must also register their water use. If you have any questions as to if you are a water user, please contact the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, Water Supply Division. The District Ag Resource Planners are able to help certify your acreage and send the necessary compliance letter to DEP for you. A fee of $35 is charged initially with an additional charge of $35 per hour for engineering review. Please contact the District office if you have need of this service.
